The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) have received their fair share of backlash from protesters in New York speaking against the bill, to tech leaders and companies voicing their opinion against the bill.

These two bills, SOPA being in the Unites States House of Representatives and PIPA in the United States Senate, are an effort to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign websites. While the idea might have been well meaning, the execution is a disaster and is the reason protests are happening.

The bills were introduced due to pressure from media companies who want piracy of their content to end. However, at its current form, the bills would force every website to monitor every site that they link to, and if any site infringes on any content, it could put the monitoring site in jeopardy of being shut down. As well, sites are to be self monitored, so frivolous claims could potentially force sites to be taken down, with companies having to bear expensive legal bills and extensive time before being allowed to be put back up.

Facebook, one of the companies who would likely be most negatively affected by these bills, has finally made its opinion public with a post on Facebook and another post on Zuckerberg’s Twitter account, his first post since 2009.

“The internet is the most powerful tool we have for creating a more open and connected world. We can’t let poorly thought out laws get in the way of the internet’s development,” Zuckerberg wrote in his post. “Facebook opposes SOPA and PIPA, and we will continue to oppose any laws that will hurt the internet.”

“We have been working with many of these folks for months on better alternatives to these current proposals,” Zuckerberg added. “I encourage you to learn more about these issues and tell your congressmen that you want them to be pro-internet.”

“PROTECT IP and SOPA could create very real problems for Internet companies like ours that are a primary driver of innovation, growth and job creation in the 21st century economy,” the Facebook page noted.

Several other websites, including Wikipedia, Reddit and Boing Boing have gone down for the day in protest, with message on their websites to show their opposition for the bills.
