TIFF BELL Lightbox to Open in September

TIFF BELL LightboxPic: TIFFPiers Handling has announced that TIFF Bell Lightbox will be opening its doors to the public on Sept. 12. The director and CEO of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) made the announcement at an event celebrating Canadian filmmakers.
“TIFF Bell Lightbox is a permanent home for cinema lovers from around the world,” said Handling in a statement. “We have spent a decade working on this project and its opening marks a new step in the evolution of TIFF. Audiences visiting our new home and experiencing our wide range of programming will see that we are so much more than a 10-day event in September.”
TIFF Bell Lightbox hopes to become the world’s leading destination for film lovers.
The Lightbox was designed by Toronto-based architecture firm Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects (KPMB). It will feature five public cinemas, a three-storey atrium, three learning studios, two galleries, a centre for students and scholars, the staff offices of TIFF, a bistro, a restaurant and a lounge.
The number of cinemas that are set to be fully operational during the upcoming Festival is yet to be determined. However, festival-goers will still get to attend screenings in the new TIFF Bell Lightbox.
The year-round programming for TIFF Bell Lightbox – being driven by Artistic Director Noah Cowan – will include cross-media exhibitions, lectures, and film-related learning opportunities for film lovers of different ages. Two programming initiatives have already been announced, including Essential Cinema (a film and exhibition programme curated by TIFF) and Tim Burton, the successful MoMA exhibit.
“Exciting film programming, world-class exhibitions and gallery shows will be presented every day of the year to audiences, and a wide range of educational activities will allow our audiences to fully explore their passion for film,” added Handling. “Our doors are now open to the amazing riches of the cinema on a year-round basis and we look forward to curating experiences, not just films.”
