Ottawa Bluesfest Combines Comedy with Music
New additional programming features Jewish comedians.
Ottawa Bluesfest 2009Pic: Ottawa Bluesfest Flickr groupThink of it as the Canadian Coachella only with a mix of Just For Laughs. The 2010 Ottawa Bluesfest boasts a star-dudded lineup of singers, rappers and bands. But a different set of performers will also be taking centre stage.
This year the event added stand-up comedy to its programming. "The rationale for this enhanced programming is to provide a new festival experience," says executive director Mark Monahan in a press release. “The idea is simple – it's an attempt to attract a new audience to the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest. The festival currently attracts a huge base of music fans. We believe that including comedy will add to the already significant draw of the festival. Ottawa is a great market for comedy.”
Two of the comedians invited are Louis C.K. and Lewis Black. Both comedians are from Jewish families. Louis C.K., whose real last name is Szekely, has been a writer for shows such as Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O’ Brien and the Chris Rock Show. Black has won a Grammy award for Best Comedy Album in 2007.
Aside from the comedy acts, Jewish flavor is also sprinkled in the music lineup. RUSH and Hole, both of which are fronted by Jewish singers (Geddy Lee and Courtney Love, respectively) will take the stage, while Drake is scheduled to make an appearance. Musical stars such as Arcade Fire, Joan Jett, Jimmy Cliff, Iron Maiden and Weezer are also part of the roster.
