International Festival of Authors Expands Touring Program
IFOA Ontario will bring writers such as Yann Martel and Andrea Levy to cities across the province.
Robert RotenbergPic: readings.orgA host of writers from the 31st International Festival of Authors will be touring Ontario this fall, as IFOA expands its traveling program to include festival events in 14 cities across the province.
Now in its fourth year, IFOA Ontario brings a taste of its events to communities across Ontario, including access to the Festival’s roster of acclaimed contemporary writers from around the globe.
This year, events will take place in Hamilton, London, Milton, Owen Sound, Picton, Port Hope, Sudbury and Windsor – all new additions to the list – as well as Barrie, Burlington, Midland, Orillia, Parry Sound, and Uxbridge.
Some authors of interest to the Jewish community include:
New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik has written Paris to the Moon and Through the Children’s Gate, and his latest novel, The Steps Across the Water, explores themes of identity and home through the eyes of a 10-year-old girl. He will be reading as part of IFOA Hamilton on Tues. Oct. 26.
Canadian-born, New York-based writer David Rakoff will also participate in IFOA Hamilton. Besides working as a freelance writer, Rakoff has published books of essays (the third of which, Half Empty, is due out this month) and acted in film and TV.
Andrea Levy, who was born in London to Jamaican parents and carries Jewish lineage from her father’s side, returns to her family’s homeland with her latest novel, The Long Song. She will be reading in Owen Sound on Wed. Nov. 3.
Criminal lawyer/writer Robert Rotenberg will join the IFOA Noir Round Table in Windsor on Fri. Nov. 5. His debut novel, OldCity Hall, became an international hit. Set in Toronto, it tells the story of a mysterious murder trial and travels through well-known Toronto locations, such as the Don Jail and Old City Hall itself.
Yann Martel, Can-lit icon and author of the lauded Life of Pi, will be interviewed by Charles Foran in Uxbridge on Sat. Oct. 30. His most recent novel, Beatrice & Virgil, received lukewarm reviews but remained on bestseller lists for months. It deals with Holocaust themes through a fantastical premise.
