Easy A is easily one of the best teen comedies of the year. Directed by Will Gluck, the flick offers plenty of laughs, great lines and a quirky protagonist.
The comedy tells the story of Olive Penderghast (brilliantly played by Emma Stone). Olive is a clean cut high schooler who tells a little white lie about her virginity and starts seeing parallels between her life and Hester Prynne’s in The Scarlet Letter. She takes matters into her own hands when she decides to use the rumours about her to climb the social ladder.
But after Olive pretends to have sex with a bullied gay friend (Dan Byrd) and a slew of other guys, things get out of control and she goes from anonymous to infamous.
Emma Stone has played supporting characters in many high-profile movies (Superbad and Zombieland to name a few). It was about time she got the chance to carry a movie - and lets just say she doesn’t disappoint. While the impressive cast features Amanda Bynes, Stanley Tucci, Thomas Haden Church, Lisa Kudrow, Patricia Clarkson, Penn Badgley and a number of other actors, it’s ultimately Stone’s performance that makes this movie what it is.
Easy A premiered at TIFF and is out in Canadian theatres.
