The most talked about movie since Avatar is being released this week and it couldn’t be any more Jewish. The Social Network, based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, is the story of the early beginning of Faceook, the largest social media site in the world.

The movie’s written by Aaron Sorkin, the veteran television writer whose credits include the West Wing and the upcoming Brad Pitt feature, Moneyball and directed by David Fincher, of Fight Club fame. Playing Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg is Jesse Eisenberg, whose recently released movie Holly Rollers introduced audiences to drug dealing Hasidic Jews.

So we have a Jewish book author, Jewish film author, Jewish director and a Jewish actor playing a Jewish hero. This would usually either lead to a Woody Allen movie, of which none have been good in recent years, or a Coen Brothers movie, which would put most audiences to sleep.

However, the consensus here is that The Social Network is one of the best movies of the year. Here are snippets of some early reviews:

“Smartly written by Aaron Sorkin, directed to within an inch of its life by David Fincher and anchored by a perfectly pitched performance by Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network is a barn-burner of a tale that unfolds at a splendid clip” – Kenneth Turan: Los Angeles Times

“The social Network has everything you want in a thriller for the brain: huge doses of ego and duplicity, corporate backstabbing, and some very layered performances.” – Owen Gleiberman: Entertainment Weekly

“Brilliantly directed by David Fincher, this provocative film probes the impetus for invention, the changing face of social interaction and the limits of friendship – the old-fashioned kind and the version linking 500 million Facebook users” – Caludia Puig: USA Today

“David Fincher’s film has the rare quality of being not only as smart as its brilliant hero, but in the same way. It is cocksure, impatient, cold, exciting and instinctively perceptive.” – Roger Ebert: Chicago Sun-Times

The Social Network opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, Oct 1st, 2010.
