Steven Machat, a Jewish lawyer from Hackney, has almost 300 pieces of extremely rare rock music history- Leonard Cohen’s home video collection from childhood.

Cohen is a former client of Machat’s, as well as his late father who was Cohen’s longtime manager. It is rumoured that the partnership between Machat and Cohen ended badly, but not before Machat funded a film about Cohen’s career. He collected videos from his childhood and recorded him on stage and behind the scenes of his 1972 European tour.

This never seen before footage includes scenes of the singer as a child at home, at concerts, and in cities including Jerusalem and Paris.

The footage supposedly disappeared in 1980 and their location has been the subject of a dispute between Machat and Cohen until recently.

In 2009, Cohen discovered the lost footage and offered the reels to Machat in order to have them restored. The footage subsequently formed the basis for a remake of a documentary about the singer entitled “Bird On A Wire”, which was broadcast on BBC Four last year.

Machat, 58, announced that he will be selling the reels because he strongly believes that Cohen’s fans should have the chance to own them, and also noted that he wanted to give his father back his legacy.
