American author Philip Roth, has been awarded the fourth Man Booker International Prize worth £60,000 ($94,000 CAD). Awarded every two years, the Booker International is bestowed to a writer “for their achievement in fiction on the world stage,” organizers said.

"One of the particular pleasures I've had as a writer is to have my work read internationally despite all the heartaches of translation that that entails. I hope the prize will bring me to the attention of readers around the world who are not familiar with my work. This is a great honour and I'm delighted to receive it,” Roth said.

Roth has been one of the most celebrated living novelists, receiving a Pulitzer Prize in 1997 for American Pastoral, two National Book Awards for Sabbath’s Theater and Goodbye Columbus, and two National Book Critics Circle Awards (The Counterlife and Patrimony). He has also been awarded the PEN/Faulkner Award thrice. Portnoy’s Complaint, Roth’s 1969 controversial book was included in Time Magazine’s “All Time 100 Novels” list.

"For more than 50 years Philip Roth's books have stimulated, provoked and amused an enormous, and still expanding, audience. His imagination has not only recast our idea of Jewish identity, it has also reanimated fiction, and not just American fiction, generally," explained Rick Gekoski, head judge on the judging panel.

Comprised of three judges, Gekoski was joined on the panel by award-winning author Justin Cartwright, and novelist/critic Carmen Callil. Callil, who is also the founder of feminist publishing house Virago, has sparked controversy after very publicly withdrawing from the panel, in protest of Roth’s win. Banking on the newfound media attention, apparently Callil will outline why Roth is an unworthy winner in an article for The Guardian this Saturday.

Previous winners of the Man Booker International Prize are Ismail Kadare in 2005, Chinua Achebe in 2007, and Alice Munro in 2009. Roth will be celebrated at an awards ceremony on June 28 in London.
