The most comprehensive exhibition of late artist, Lucian Freud’s work will be on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London. “Lucian Freud Portraits” will run from February 9 to May 27, 2012, and includes more than 100 paintings, some which have never been viewed by the public.
Included in the exhibition, will be Freud’s final unfinished work titled Portrait of a Hound (2011). The painting features Freud’s long-time assistant and friend David Dawson, and Dawson’s whippet, Eli.
"Like any artist, he was most excited about the most recent work he was painting. He started every painting as if it was his first. He wanted it to be a unique vision, different from the last one," said Sarah Howgate, curator of the Portrait Gallery.
“He had continued working on it until he was too frail to carry on and it was left in the artist’s studio when he died,” she said added.
The retrospective exhibition is a result of several years of planning betwixt the gallery, and Freud himself.
“Had he lived to see it, he would have been incredibly moved by it. It is his life in paint. We were all sensitive to it being an exhibition made at the end of his life,” stated Howgate.
Lucian Freud died on July 20, at the age of 88.
