Lea Michele Fights Back After Horse Death
The Glee star and PETA complain to NYC mayor Bloomberg after horse dies in city streets.
Glee actress, Lea Michele, has written a heartfelt letter to NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg regarding the recent death of a carriage horse.
Earlier this month, a horse collapsed on the busy streets of New York City right before a full schedule of carriage rides. This incident has sparked an outcry from many animal rights advocates including Michele.
Michele is not only an animal lover and vegan, but also an advocate for PETA. The actress teamed up with the animal rights organization previously in an attempt to ban fur. Now, she has written a letter to Bloomberg, asking that he support a city council bill to ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC.
"As a New York City native, I was saddened to learn from my friends at PETA that one of the horses used by the city's carriage industry collapsed and died in Midtown… It was a tragic end for a beleaguered horse, and such incidents also put vehicles and passersby in danger," Michele wrote.
"With the number of horse-drawn carriage accidents and related deaths rising, it's painfully clear that these animals do not belong on busy city streets. I urge you to support [city council bill] Intro 86A, which would replace horse-drawn carriages with safe, vintage-replica electric cars,” she continued.
"The eco-friendly 'horseless carriages' would attract tourists with old New York glamour, protect carriage drivers' jobs by offering them first rights to the car medallions, and allow for the approximately 220 horses currently working in the carriage industry to be retired to sanctuaries. Please join other city council members in supporting Intro 86A," Michele concluded.
