‘The Free World’ is a beautifully paced novel interspersed with both humour and tragedy that effectively captures the immigrant experience. The story opens in 1978 with the arrival of the Krasnansky family in Rome. Throughout the book, we are introduced to a colourful cast of characters including the family’s patriarch Samuil, his wife Emma, their eldest son Karl, and younger son Alec. Each family member struggles to find their way in Rome, while simultaneously dealing with the reasons for leaving the Soviet Union in the first place.
David Bezmozgis is a Canadian author and filmmaker, born in Latvia. After receiving an M.F.A from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema, he completed a 25-minute documentary entitled ‘L.A Mohel’ that awarded him recognition. In 2004, he published ‘Natasha and Other Stories’ which originally appeared in Harper’s and was included in the Best American Short Stories 2005 collection. In 2008, Bezmozgis completed his first film, ‘Victoria Day’ which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
‘The Free World’ has put Bezmozgis on the international map, earning him a place on The New Yorker’s 2010 top 20 fiction writers under 40 and has been shortlisted for both the Scotiabank Giller Prize and Governor General’s Awards.
