Parade RouteMacy’s 85th annual Thanksgiving Day Parade will begin in just moments! The parade can be a little overwhelming… especially if you’re privileged enough to see it in person, as opposed to on TV like the majority of us. Over 3.5 million people are expected to attend (with over 50 million watching on TV) , and it seems there will be an equal number of participants in the parade itself- assuming you include the balloons, floats, musical performers, cheerleaders, dancers, marching bands and Broadway cast members.
Let’s start with the route. The parade starts off on Central Park West at West 77th Street and travels south. It turns left to go east along Central Park South and then heads down Seventh and Sixth Avenues, ultimately hitting 42nd Street along the way and ending on 34th Street by Macy’s Herald Square.
Quite a few Jews are joining in today’s celebration including (but not limited to); Neil Diamond, Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship, Michael Feinstein, and Daniel Radcliffe (as part of the How To Succeed in Business cast).
Other notable performers include Avril Lavigne, Mary J. Blige, and Cee Lo Green… The Biebs will also be making an appearance.
Tim Burton will be premiering his balloon, B., a freakish character that could have only been imagined by Burton himself. Some other balloons to watch out for are Paul Frank’s Julius , the Aflac Duck Balloonicle (a balloon on wheels) and classics Sonic The Hedgehog, Snoopy, and Spider-Man.
So far, the weather forecast looks good, which is spectacular for parade-goers, but is inconsequential to the floats and balloons that are tested in Macy’s Studio for durability, buoyancy, flight patterns, and aerodynamics.
