Maurice Sendak contributes 33 Menorahs to Hanukkah Exhibit
New York City’s Jewish Museum is launching a Hanukkah exhibit on Friday, and they invited Where The Wild Things Are author, Maurice Sendak, to select a few menorahs to contribute… little did they know, he would return with 33 unique treasures.
Brooklyn-born Sendak, son of Jewish immigrant parents, lost many family members in the Holocaust. The menorahs he selected for “An Artist Remembers: Hanukkah Lamps Selected by Maurice Sendak” are minimalist and simple, that he described as “severe-looking” which evokes the Holocaust.
The menorahs come from various parts of the globe including Europe, the United States, and Israel. They were crafted from the 18th to 20th centuries.
The exhibit also includes original drawings from Sendak’s books and an audio conversation with curators.
“An Artist Remembers: Hanukkah Lamps Selected by Maurice Sendak” opens on December 2nd and will run until January 29th, 2012.
