X Factor’s Paula Abdul Receives Death Threats

Drew's elimination led to angry tweeters threatening the lives of Paula and Nicole

I’m not sure what is more upsetting about this story- that some immature teenagers with foul language posting some unnecessary comments on Twitter are considered “death threats” and are being taken seriously, or that we live in an age that individuals of any age can become so infatuated with a reality show that a contestants elimination will lead to this behaviour.

On last week’s elimination episode of “X-Factor”, 14-year-old Drew was asked to pack her bags. The singer broke down in tears and mentor, Simon Cowell, was enraged.

Cowell kept his calm, not allowing himself to speak with fellow judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, but the audience was not as respectful… booing and screaming could be heard louder than an explosion. Drew’s fans at home took it one step farther… posting hateful and derogatory comments on Twitter.

One fan tweeted “@PaulaAbdul and @nicolescherzy you two deserve all the hate. You both made a selfish decision and should be ashamed of yourselves!!”

Another person wrote “@PaulaAbdul & @NicoleScherzy dumb wh**** voted off the wrong person because they’re hating @drewryniewicz has more talent than they ever will.”

Abdul and Scherzinger were shocked by the response… well, obviously. It’s a reality show!

Drew is extremely talented. In fact, her version of Justin Bieber’s “Baby” gave me a newfound respect for both the song and overproduced pop music, but it is a television competition. This story ends here.
