Brock University’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute will be hosting a seminar on December 12th with a focus on the art of Kosher winemaking.

The Niagara Region has become a world-renowned destination for it’s wine and wine culture. With dozens of wineries available to chose from, each with their own process and specialty, you would assume Kosher wine would be easy to come by. Surprisingly, with the exception of one Niagara winery over 25 years ago and Rodrigues Winery that produces non-grape based fruit wines, not a single Canadian winery has produced kosher wine in any significant quantity.

The kosher wine industry has grown substantially over the past 25 years, with kosher certified brands being imported to Canada from more than 12 countries, and sold in Ontario at LCBO. So why haven't Canadian wineries picked up on the trend?

Rabbi Nachum Rabinowitz (Rabbinic Coordinator with the Kashruth Division of the Orthodox Union) will be presenting “Demystifying Kosher Winemaking” at the December 12th event, with the goal of eliminating popular misconceptions about kosher wine. Rabinowitz is the Orthodox Union’s Senior Wine and Liquor Supervisor, with many years in the wine industry under his belt. He performs site inspections and oversees the kosher supervision of wine in all 12 countries that the Orthodox Union has primary responsibility for kashruth.

A wine testing will immediately follow the Rabbi’s discussion. Wine drinkers that do not observe kosher are encouraged to attend to determine if they can spot any significant differences between kosher and non-kosher wines of different varieties.

The event is free. Parking is available in Lot ‘E’ at $2.50 an hour. Please arrive before 5pm for the one-hour talk (5-6pm) at Brock University, Inniskillin Hall, H313.
