Aubrey Graham, known to the world as rap superstar Drake, is a very proud Torontonian- often sending shout-outs to his hometown in songs-but he may have irked a few Toronto officials with his new billboard on the Gardiner Expressway.

The billboard features both the word “Toronto” using very similar font to the city’s official logo and has a blue background almost identical to government-issued highway signs. Additionally, Drake has placed his ‘October’s Very Own’ owl emblem in the spot where Toronto City Hall’s image usually appears. If you look at the billboard quickly, it would be mistaken as a welcome sign to Toronto.

Underneath the word “Toronto” is Drake’s new album title, Take Care, and the November 15th release date. If this was the focus of the advertisement, there is a possibility is might appear as such- an advertisement, but underneath, in larger font, it reads “Population 2,753,609”.

The billboard was put up in October in anticipation of the album’s November release date, but city officials just learned of its existence at the end of last week.

“We would suggest,” city spokesperson Francine Antonio-Forte said told The Star newspaper, “that the treatment of the word Toronto used on the billboard is very similar to the wordmark that forms part of the Toronto logo. The similarity of the wordmarks, in conjunction with other creative elements used for the billboard, may cause some confusion about the source of the information.”

“While the city is proud of its local and international talent, we have a general practice of reviewing and addressing reported or known cases related to the possible misuse of the Toronto logo,” she said.

Drake might have claimed Toronto as his own in the song “City Is Mine”, but perhaps he forgot that although he loves the city he was raised in, he doesn’t literally own its’ intellectual property.
