MLB MVP Ryan Braun Tests Positive For Performance Enhancing Drug

First Jewish MVP in almost 50 years calls report 'B.S.'

Milwaukee Brewer Ryan Braun, the 2011 National League Most Valuable player, tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug, a fine that could carry a 50-game suspension to begin the 2012 season.

Braun, however, calls the report “B.S.” and plans to appeal any suspension.

While Braun, 28, may hold the distinction of being the first Jewish MLB MVP in nearly 50 years he does not hold the distinction of being the only MVP to test positive for PEDs. MLB has had a rough beginning to this century when it comes to its public image and the use of PEDs by some of its players, including past MVPs, and should these reports be true, this will become another black eye for a sport that has claimed that the worse was behind them.

"The use of steroids and amphetamines amongst today's players has greatly subsided and is virtually nonexistent, as our testing results have shown,” stated MLB commissioner Bud Selig. “The so-called steroid era — a reference that is resented by the many players who played in that era and never touched the substances — is clearly a thing of the past, and Mark's [McGuire] admission today is another step in the right direction."

According to ESPN, Braun had provided a urine sample during the 2011 playoffs and was then informed of the positive results in late October. The first test showed elevated levels of testosterone and a follow up test reveled the testosterone was synthetic.

Braun issued a statement via his agency:

"There are highly unusual circumstances surrounding this case which will support Ryan's complete innocence and demonstrate there was absolutely no intentional violation of the program. While Ryan has impeccable character and no previous history, unfortunately, because of the process we have to maintain confidentiality and are not able to discuss it any further, but we are confident he will ultimately be exonerated."

Braun signed a five-year, $105 million extension with the Brewers during the 2011 season.
