Oprah Following in Roseanne’s Farming Footsteps?
Oprah Winfrey plans to go into organic farming in Hawaii if OWN fails.
Earlier this year, Roseanne was interviewed on The Oprah Winfrey Show as one of her final guests. During this episode, we discovered that one of our favourite TV funny ladies has settled into a happy and comfortable life in Hawaii farming macadamia nuts. It seems that this discovery may have inspired the host, as a recent interview with The Associated Press indicates Oprah’s interest in also moving to Hawaii (Maui, to be more specific) to start an organic farm.
The interview focuses primarily on OWN’s so-called failure. Although Oprah does not believe the network can be deemed a failure in it’s first year, she does recognize that it is a possibility in the future.
"If this doesn't work out, I'm going to go into organic farming in Maui. And I'm not kidding." She says.
But don’t think the billionaire has given up quite yet. Her new show, Oprah’s Next Chapter, premieres on New Year’s Day, which promises to bring in new viewership.
Here are some quotes from the interview describing her hopes for the future of her network, and her understanding of why the network wasn’t as successful as it could’ve been at launch.
"I would absolutely say it is and was not where I want it to be for year one," Winfrey said. "My focus up until [last] May was doing what I do best, which is 'The Oprah Winfrey Show,' and giving that my full attention" until its conclusion."
"Somebody was talking to me in that kind of saddened, 'How are you?' tone, and I was thinking, 'I'm fine,'" said Winfrey, adding, "Everybody has told me — Ted Turner has told me, Barry Diller has told me, Lorne Michaels has told me, David Geffen has told me — anybody who's ever worked with a channel, who's ever done anything, has said it takes three to five years," she said, adding, "You have to do the work. ... You do not have to pay attention to the criticism."
"I don't understand what anybody was thinking," she said of the network's original rollout plan. "You're going on the air, you've got four shows. What do you think you're going to do by Tuesday? Did they think people were going to turn on the channel just because it had my name on it?" she said. "People didn't turn on The Oprah Winfrey Show because my name was on it. It was absolutely topic driven every day," she said.
And if OWN ends up failing, perhaps another network will offer Oprah a reality show following her life as an organic farmer? We know how well that panned out for Roseanne.
