U.S. Man Pleads Guilty to Threatening “South Park” Creators
Online threats result in federal charges
A Muslim convert accused of threatening the writers of TV series South Park pleaded guilty to federal charges this Thursday.
33-year-old Jesse Curtis Morton, also known as Younus Abdullah Muhammed, was criminally charged after posting threatening comments against South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone in April 2010. The remarks appeared on a website run by Morton for the Revolution Muslim organization. The site was co-managed with another man, Zachary A. Chesser, or Abu Talhah Al-Amrikee.
The comments were a response to the series’ depiction of the Muslim prophet Mohammad as a character in a bear costume. A message appeared on the website claiming Parker and Stone “will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh for airing this show.” Van Gogh was killed in 2004 after making a film about women’s abuse in the Muslim world. Morton and Chesser also posted the creators’ residences and urged readers to “pay them a visit.”
Morton pleaded guilty to counts of conspiracy, communicating threats and using the Internet to intimidate.
Morton was arrested in Morocco last October and faces up to 15 years in prison. Chesser pleaded guilty to similar charges in October 2010 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
