Racist Hunger Games Fans Attack Kravitz & Stenberg
Obsessed Hunger Games fans speak out on Twitter about black characters
Hunger Games was the most anticipated film of 2012. Based on Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, Hunger Games set many records on opening weekend including biggest non-sequel and 3rd highest box office of all time. But it seems a few fans of the book opted out of seeing the film because of certain casting choices.
Although Rue, a young female tribute from District 11, is described in Collins’ book as having “dark brown skin and eyes,” Hunger Games fans were shocked and upset by the film’s choice to cast Amandla Stenberg (a young African-American girl) in the role.
Here is a small selection of the ignorant tweets below:
@johnnyknoxIV wrote “I was pumped about the Hunger Games. Until I learned that a black girl was playing Rue.”
@LexieBrowning wrote, “And for the record, I’m still pissed that rue is black. Like you think she might have mentioned that…? Is that just me, or…”
@Joe_Longley wrote, “@KatrinaOrsini EWW rue is black??? I’m not watching.”
“Call me racist but when I found out rue was black her death wasn’t as sad”
“why does rue have to be black not gonna lie kinda ruined the movie.”
As mentioned, these are just a few… they get much worse. Some Twitter users went as far as calling Stenberg a “black B---h” and “n----r”.
Hunger Games fans also made comments about Lenny Kravitz and Dayo Okeniyi who played Cinna and Thresh.
Many of the accounts have been reportedly deleted or made private since these shocking comments were called out by media outlets.
