The Dictator – May 11^th

Everyone remembers Borat, right? Of course, he’s the world’s most famous anti-Semitic Kazakh journalist played by the actually-Semitic Sasha Baron Cohen. Well, do you remember Bruno? He’s everyone’s least favourite, and also anti-Semitic, fashion icon played by the still-Semitic Sasha Baron Cohen. Well, now Baron Cohen is at it again, hopefully emulating more of Borat than Bruno in his latest comedy staring a foreign, and obviously anti-Semitic, character: The Dictator.

It’s Baron Cohen’s first fully scripted film, and if the trailers are any indication, audiences are in for quite a treat when the film hits theatres on May 11^th.

Battleship – May 18^th

It’s the latest movie to be taken from a Hasbro product (in this case a popular board game), given the robots/aliens coming to destroy earth treatment, loaded with hundreds of million dollars of special effects, probably lacking a story, and still set to be totally awesome. Yeah, it’s basically “Transformers in the ocean,” but who cares, really? This movie will make billions of dollars with or without you, so you might as well see it anyways.

Directed by Peter Berg, no one is expecting this film to be any good, but everyone is expecting it to be the very definition of a Hollywood blockbuster: loud, slick, cool, and profitable. Battleship is set to sink your Battleship on May 18^th.

That’s My Boy – June 15^th

On one hand, Adam Sandler has had it rough lately. He keeps making horrible movies that are panned by critics and just recently he broke records by winning EVERY SINGLE “award” at the Razzies…including worst actress for Jack and Jill. His old fans are beginning to hate him for films like Grown Ups and just about everything else he’s done in the last 5 years. He just can’t seem to catch a break.

On the other hand, Sandler is making more money than he’s ever made in his career, each film he makes is more successful than his last, and he’s now making Grown Ups 2, so clearly he doesn’t care what his fans or critics think. Or does he? This summer, Sandler is making his first R-Rated film since 1996’s Bulletproof, and the trailer actually looks funny. Could this be his comeback?

That’s My Boy, starring Sandler and Andy Samberg as father and son, hits theatres June 15^th. Fingers crossed everyone, fingers crossed.

The Amazing Spider-Man – July 3^rd

It’s been a long road, but finally Spider-Man is back on the big screen. After plans for a sequel to 2007’s Spiderman 3 were scrapped, Sony decided to reboot the entire franchise and start again with this summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man. The film takes Peter Parker back to high school and promises to tell “the untold story” behind Parker and his parents.

With a ton of great talent behind the film, including 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb, The Social Network’s Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacey, The Amazing Spider-Man, coming to theatres July 3^rd, is shaping up to be the beginning of an amazing franchise.

The Dark Knight Rises – July 20^th

Although it’s been five years since The Dark Knight came to theatres in 2007, the long-awaited end to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is finally almost here. When you’ve got Christopher Nolan making a movie with Christian Bale and Batman, you know it’s going to be successful. Throw in Joseph Gordon-Levitt to the mix and you’ve got a license to print money…and good reviews.
