Warner Bros. has stopped production on Mel Gibson’s controversial movie project about Judah Maccabee, according to TheWrap.

The story of Maccabee is a meaningful one, following a hero whose victory over the Greek and Syrian armies during 2ndCentry B.C. is still celebrated today during Hanukkah.

According to the studio, the movie was put on hold after reading the script by writer Joe Eszterhas, which was delivered to Warner Bros. in late February. Warner production president Greg Silverman described it as lacking in “feeling” and “a sense of triumph,” according to TheWrap.

News first broke out in September that Gibson had reached a production deal with Warner’s to direct the film. Jewish groups were understandably upset. The American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants called the choice a “moral lapse of judgment.”

It is good to see Warner Bros. coming to its senses, even if the production was publicly paused for the wrong reason. It’s difficult for Jews to digest the idea of a person who previously had accused Jews of being responsible for all the world’s wars, telling the story of greatest of all Jewish war victories.
