Actress Mila Kunis currently has a very charmed life in the United States, starring in several Hollywood films and hit TV shows, but Kunis’ life began filled with fear and hatred.

Kunis was raised in the Ukraine, forced to hide her Jewish identity due to fear of persecution. The majority of the actresses’ family was killed in the Holocaust and her childhood school was strewn with Anti-Semitic graffiti.

Kunis and her family fled Ukraine when she was only 7 years old to start a new life in the U.S. In a recent interview with Britain’s The Sun, Kunis opened up about her Jewish identity.

“My parents raised me to know I was Jewish. You know who you are inside,” Kunis explained.

When the ‘Black Swan’ star first moved to the United States, she described her experience as miserable. Kunis had difficult adapting to the culture and language.

“I cried every day. I didn’t understand the culture. I didn’t understand the people,” Kunis said.

Kunis started to gain confidence once she enrolled in acting classes at 9 years old. Within 2 years, she landed a role on ‘Days of Our Lives’ and soon after won the role of Jackie on ‘That 70’s Show’.

Now that Kunis speaks the language and has established a cushy life for herself, she says that she’s much happier in the United States because she has the freedom to express herself.

“I’m pretty Jewish, I’ve got to say. I go ‘Oy’ and people are like, ‘Oh, you’re very Jewish,’ the actress said.

“When I’m in New York, I become super-Jew. When I’m in L.A. I’m like a California surfer girl.”

Watch out for Kunis in Seth MacFarlane’s directorial debut, ‘Ted’, with Mark Wahlberg.
