NFL’s Cleveland Browns Signs Jewish Tackle to Four-Year Contract
Mitchell Schwartz Joins Brother Geoff in Gridiron Career
The National Football League’s Cleveland Browns signed eight of its draft picks earlier this week including offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz, a Jewish tackle from the University of California, Berkeley.
Schwartz, a 6 foot 5, 318 pound second-round draft pick of the Browns and 37th overall pick, signed a four-year contract valued at just over $5 million.
The 23-year-old Schwartz began his football career while attending Palisades Charter High School, where he was regarded as a three-star offensive tackle prospect. Schwartz attended the University of California, Berkeley from 2007 to 2011 where he started all 51 games during his career at either left or right tackle.
It would appear that Schwartz has the DNA needed to succeed in the NFL, as his brother, Geoff, was the Panthers' seventh-round pick out of Oregon in 2008, started in 2010 but was injured last year, and recently signed with the Vikings.
A model of consistency during his college career, Schwartz credits various unique blocking plays at Cal for improving his entire play. He impressed scouts at the Senior Bowl workouts, many of whom were particularly enthusiastic about his poise and talent when they saw how he handled some of the best pass rushers in the country.
