Sacha Baron Cohen is currently preparing for his lead role in a new film about late Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury, but who will play his long-long companion, Mary Austin?

Katy Perry has expressed interest in the role, according to The Daily Mirror.

“Katy would love to be in the film as she is such a huge fan,” a source close to Katy Perry told the publication.

“She would want to play Mary Austin ideally. Katy has a similar look to Mary and would be a brilliant foil to Sacha.”

Freddie Mercury and Mary Austin dated for 6 years in the 1970’s before Mercury came out as bi-sexual, causing them to break up. Although Mercury began dating men, the two remained extremely close with the singer referring to Austin as his “common-law wife”.

Before passing away in 1991, Mercury said, “All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary. But it’s simply impossible.”

The currently untitled film, produced by Graham King, will commence filming next year. Queen stars Brian May and Roger Taylor are helping with the films development.

Katy Perry is hitting the big screen next month, starring in her first 3D concert movie, Part of Me.
