Lebron’s 1st NBA ring causes Twitter to erupt in jokes about Gilbert’s guarantee
Lebron James makes his 'Decision' in 2010As basketball fans outside the state of Florida watched a nightmare unfold in the NBA last night, with the much-hated LeBron James finally capturing his first NBA title in his ninth season, it was certainly difficult to celebrate.
James became the biggest villain in sports in 2010, when he decided to take his talents to South Beach and unite with Dwyane Wade and former Toronto Raptors star Chris Bosh on the Miami Heat. After eight long suspenseful days of free agency, James announced to the world he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he had played for seven seasons and promised to bring an NBA championship, in an hour-long ESPN special titled, The Decision.
The show drew the ire of not only heartbroken Cavs fans, but millions of NBA fans who were unimpressed with the way Miami’s new big three came together.
That same night, Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert infamously posted an open letter to Cavs fans on the team website, written in navy blue, comic sans font, in which he condemned LeBron’s “betrayal” and disloyalty to the franchise and “PERSONALLY GUARANTEE[d] THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE.”
For the record, the entire letter is still posted on the Cavs website.
Over the course of the next two years, fans would constantly rip on LeBron for his lack of NBA championship rings, his constant fourth quarter disappearing acts, as well as his receding hairline. But on Thursday night, James was finally crowned king as he won his first NBA title, thus putting an end to the ring jokes. While King James’ hairline isn’t getting any better, it was time for the jokes to shift back to Gilbert on his failed guarantee.
