Iran Wants Facebook to Help Fight Porn
The Iranian police force wants to cleanse the Internet of all content deemed unacceptable
According to Iranian news agency ISNA, Iranian officials are reaching out to Facebook in an effort to remove all Pages and Groups that include pornography or prostitution.
ISNA interviewed head of Iran’s “cyber-police”, Kamal Hadianfar, regarding the initiative to cleanse the Internet of all inappropriate content.
"Pornography is a crime not just in Iran but also in other countries such as the United States," Hadianfar began.
"In 2010, Facebook served as a free domain for criminals, but in the name of God and with the presence of the police over the past 15 months, we have made many significant moves to cleanse social networks, especially that of Facebook."
Facebook does not allow pornographic material on the website. The problem lies in Iran’s definition of pornography, which defers vastly from ours in North America. In Iran, porn is not limited to photographs of sexual activities or nudity, but also any graphic or image that suggests such activities including the letters ‘XXX’.
Iran’s call for Facebook’s help is surprising considering their previous stance of banning the social network entirely. In 2009, Iran blocked its citizens from accessing Facebook due to fears that activists were forming opposition movements on the website.
According to CNET, Facebook has not responded to Iran’s plea yet.
