German official and honorary International Olympic Committee member, Walther Troger, has been accused of performing the ‘Nazi salute’ during the opening ceremony of the London Games.

Troger was filmed extending his left arm back and forth repeatedly alongside the German team while they marched in Olympic Stadium on Friday, July 27th.

The IOC is outraged that Troger has received such atrocious allegations, stating that the German official is not only tolerant, but a supporter of Israel.

“I can’t think of anyone who is less anti-Semitic than him,” said IOC spokesman, Mark Adams, adding that he was “devastated that it was interpreted that way.”

In 1972, Troger was serving as mayor of Olympic Village during the Munich Games. According to The Telegraph, he offered to trade himself for Israeli hostages during the Black September terrorist attack. Additionally, in 2004, Troger complained to the Olympic Committee when Germans were seen wearing t-shirts with the phrase “Blitzkrieg- it’s only a game”.

German commentators also took to Twitter encouraging the public not to misread Troger’s salutes during the ceremony. They pointed out that Nazis saluted with their right hand, while Troger was saluting with his left.

"It's infamous, disgusting and unacceptable to create any kind of relation to Nazis. He's been standing all his life for tolerance, understanding and fair play," said Christian Kalue, a spokesman for the German Olympic Sports Federation.
