Jon Stewart Bashes NBC Olympics Coverage
The Daily Show host ridicules NBC’s decision to cutaway from the terrorist victim tribute in favor of a Michael Phelps interview
NBC has received a lot of flack for its’ Olympics coverage over the last few days. The U.S network has chosen not to air many key events, and many sports are not being aired at all. Additionally, the Olympic events that are aired, do not appear live and are edited and cut at important moments.
For example, during the Olympics opening ceremony on Friday evening, NBC chose to cutaway from a tribute to the victims of the July 7, 2005 bombing in London, in favor of an interview between Michael Phelps and Ryan Seacrest.
Jon Stewart addressed this issue on ‘The Daily Show’, stating “You wouldn’t air a six-minute tribute to the rest of the world’s terror victims? Because the world’s most overexposed land-based mammal had a chance to speak to the world’s most overexposed water-based mammal?”
In defense, NBC claimed their decision was based on what they assumed the American audience was interested in viewing.
And to that Jon Stewart says, “You’re NBC! You don’t know how to tailor television for an American audience!”
