Jewish rower Nathan Cohen and his partner Joseph Sullivan captured gold for New Zealand, the country’s first of these 2012 summer Olympics in London on Thursday, winning the men’s double sculls event.

They finished ahead of Italian silver medalists Alessio Sartori and Romano Battisti by 1.13 seconds and third-place Slovenians Luka Spik and Iztok Cop, who won gold in the Sydney 2000 and silver in Athens 2004.

The New Zealanders broke the Olympic record in the heats and overtook the Italians with a late push in the final 200 metres.

They won with a time of 6:31:67.

“[It's] unreal. So many years of work...crossing that line first is all we ever dreamed of,” said Cohen.

The 26-year-old previously won gold in the men’s double sculls event in both the 2010 and 2011 World Rowing Championships.

He is the first person from the Southland region of New Zealand to win a medal at the Olympics.

“We didn't expect this,” Sullivan said.

“Everything came together today, the last 500 m was where they paid and we benefited.”
