David Cronenberg and Robert Pattinson Ring the NYSE Bell [VIDEO]
The Cosmopolis director and star opened the stock market in New York on Tuesday morning.
In a promotion for his forthcoming film, Cosmopolis, writer/director David Cronenberg rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) with actor Robert Pattinson.
Based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Don DeLillo, the film stars Pattinson as a multi-billionaire asset manager who on a single, fateful day transverses Manhattan in a stretch limo in the quest for a decent haircut, but instead meets a cast of characters who alter his life. To some, the subject matter seems banal, but lest we forget, nothing with Cronenberg is banal. Pattinson’s character, Eric Packer, encounters Occupy Wall Street protestors, has sex with a couple women, is stalked by a would-be assassin, has a prostate exam in the aforementioned stretch limo -- the usual, hallucinogenic, head-trip of a Cronenberg film. In essence, both the novel and film are musings on capitalism.
“It was about three years ago, and the attraction wasn’t that the novel was prescient or because of its historical place. It was the characters, the dialogue, the intensity, the humor—it’s constantly funny. I wasn’t looking to make any kind of statement. Inevitably, though, if you’re making something with integrity, it will say something about the time it’s being made in. When the novel came out, people were saying, ‘All this demonstrating-on-Wall-Street stuff isn’t very convincing.’ Now it’s obvious,” Cronenberg told TIME as to when he first discovered the book.
Considering the film’s subject matter, it was fitting then that the director and actor rang the morning NYSE bell, in an ironical, head-trip-of-a Cronenberg sort of way. Cosmopolis opens in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, August 17th. Take a gander at footage of Cronenberg and Pattinson ringing the morning bell.
