Top 20 Under 40- Ari Shaffir
Age: 38
Los Angeles based comic, Ari Shaffir, may perform locally at The Comedy Store, The Improv, and The Laugh Factory, but he also brings his personal brand of comedy to people’s homes around the globe with his popular podcast ‘The Skeptic Tank’.
Shaffir cannot pinpoint the moment when he discovered comedy was his calling. In fact, he refers to this notion as “movie crap”, but he does live to make people laugh.
“I just like making people laugh. It fills me with happiness. No matter what I want to think, that’s almost all I ever look for in a woman. How does her laugh make me feel,” he shares.
Shaffir previously referred to his comedy as “a puppet show, but way filthier and without the puppets,” but ultimately he just likes to share his daily thoughts on stage.
“I tell stories and talk about my feelings on stuff. I guess people say I’m pretty dirty, but I just see it as one of the things I think about a lot so I’m going to talk about everything I think or care about.”
Shaffir appears regularly on television as well, having been featured in HBO’s ‘Down and Dirty’, TBS’s ‘Conan’, Comedy Central’s ‘Jon Benjamin Has A Van’ and dozens of national commercials. He tours regularly with Joe Rogan, and has performed at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Toronto and Montreal, the San Francisco SketchFest, and the Bridgetown Comedy Festival.
Shaffir’s satirical shorts, ‘The Amazing Racist’ for National Lampoon were a huge hit online, garnering millions of views.
Shaffir does not consider himself religious. However, his Jewish heritage plays a role in his comedy (check out ‘Lookin’ Jewy’ on page 2) and has helped shaped who he is.
“It goes into making me who I am or what I’ve revolted into.”
