MTV Video Music Awards Do Not Disappoint
Drake gives touching speech mentioning his Jewish heritage
With explosive performances by Pink and One Direction, it was hard not to get swept away by the VMA magic. Pink started her performance with an old fan favorite, “Get the Party Started” and proceeded to wistfully fly above the audience on a trapeze-like ribbon, similar to the one she used for her 2010 Grammy performance. She then transitioned into her new single, “Blow Me (One Last Kiss),” and got the audience involved by having them wave lights shaped like red lips while girls in red lip costumes danced on stage.
New teen heart-throbs, One Direction, put on a fun spunky performance for enthusiastic fans (including the USA Olympic gymnastics team, who were adorably singing along) as well as snagging the “Best New Artist Award” at the end of the night.
Hip hop artist, Drake, also had a good night, taking home the “Best Hip Hop Video” award. He gave a touching speech about finding himself and his originality as a “black and Jewish” artist and dedicated his award to “any kid who’s has a long walk home by [him]self.” He showed even more humility when he brought up the whole Young Money team to accept the award. He even kept his cool during host Kevin Hart’s opening jokes about his fight with Chris Brown earlier this year.
With vivacious performances like these that included shifting stages, sharp dance moves, dazzling lights and costumes, and incredibly energetic performers, it was hard not to sit back and enjoy the show. Leave it the VMA’s to provide a fun and spirited night for us to enjoy!
