Israel’s WBC Qualifier Roster Leaked
MLB all-star Shawn Green and fellow outfielder Gabe Kapler headline the 28 player roster
Israel’s final 28-man roster for the upcoming qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic (WBC), set to open Sept. 19, was released Thursday by Israel Sports Radio.
As expected, the roster is headlined by former MLB all-star Shawn Green and fellow outfielder Gabe Kapler, both of whom will act as player-coaches.
The team, managed by former major league all-star catcher Brad Ausmus, is mostly comprised of American Jewish players who last suited up for minor league affiliates of MLB clubs.
Three Israelis reportedly also cracked the roster, all of whom are pitchers. Israeli natives Alon Leichman, Shlomo Lipetz, and Dan Rothem will represent their home country when the qualifying round kicks off next week in Jupiter, Fla.
Team Israel will open up the tournament against South Africa on Sept. 19. France and Spain, who will play each other the following day, round out the four-team pool.
Should Israel win its pool and qualify for the 2013 WBC in March, more star power could be on the way.
Chicago White Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis told Israel Sports Radio last month that as long as he’s healthy in March, he would represent Israel at the tournament should they advance past the qualifying round.
Other Jewish ball players such Ike Davis, Ian Kinsler, Danny Valencia, Ryan Braun, Sam Fuld, Ryan Kalish, Jason Marquis, Scott Feldman, Craig Breslow and John Grabow are rumoured to be in the mix as well.
Israel’s opening match of the WBC qualifier against South Africa will kick off Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. EDT. Israel Sports Radio will provide full live coverage of the game beginning at 6:45. There will also be a post-game show for 15 minutes following the game.
