Dianna Agron, Adam Lambert & the White House Go Purple for Spirit Day
The ‘Glee’ actress shows her support in combating the bullying of LGBT teens
Today, October 19th, is Spirit Day. Everyone around the globe is wearing their brightest purples to show support against LGBT teen bullying.
Spirit Day was founded in 2010 by Canadian teen, Brittany McMillan. In it’s first year, over 2 million people participated, and in 2011, that number almost doubled. This year, celebrities, television shows, sports teams, and even famous landmarks are going purple in support of the cause.
Dianna Agron is a GLAAD ambassador and huge supporter of Spirit Day. LGBT teen bulling is a cause close to her heart. The actress not only represents GLADD, she has also leant a hand to The Trevor Project, GLSEN, and Seth’s Law in California.
Some other celebrities showing their support are Adam Lambert, Reba McEntire, Shaquille O’Neal, and Ellen DeGeneres. Famous landmarks including Times Square, JFK and LAX airports, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Las Vegas Welcome sign will go purple today.
Many morning shows went purple, including hosts on CNBC, CNN, MSNBC, Good Morning America, TODAY, and Live! With Kelly and Michael.
Even the icons on the White House’s official Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ pages are purple.
Teams from the NBA, WNBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS, WWE, and NASCAR have gone purple via social media.
“From sports leagues to faith institutions to national monuments, schools and celebrities, millions of Americans will unite this week in an extraordinary show of support for LGBT youth and in a stand against bullying,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “At a time when 8 out of 10 LGBT youth report being harassed at school, it's now more important than ever that we let every young person know that it's okay to be who you are.”
