Purim’s origin was drawn from the story of Mordecai’s victory to stop Haman’s plot of exterminating the Jews, as told in the Book of Esther. The holiday is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar, usually in March, and lasts for a whole day. Purim, which translates to “lots" (as in "lottery"), is also known in the Jewish community for its abundance—in food, drinks and merriment. In fact, rumour has it that a person is required to drink until he or she no longer knows the difference between the “cursed be Haman” and the “blessed be Mordecai.” So in preparation for Purim this weekend, Shalom Life compiled a list of kosher wines that will surely add some buzz to the holiday. With Manichewitz being the obvious selection, we thought we'd put a spin on your Purim with the following:

Five Stone Shiraz / Cabernet Rose 2009

A rose wine from Australia recommended with light appetizers.

Yarden Pinot Noir 2004

This red wine from Israel is a mix of blackberry, plums, black cherry and pine nuts.

Golan Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

From the famous winegrowing region of Galilee in Israel, Golan red wines go great with lamb kebabs.

Hagafen Chardonnay 2007

Made in California, producers of this white wine suggest matching the chardonnay with fish.

Barkan Reserve Chardonnay 2007

For more tropical flavours, try the Barkan Reserve Chardonnay. Produced in Israel.
