The National Film Board of Canada will debut a documentary about Canadian rapper Josh Dolgin – a.k.a. “Socalled” – tomorrow on the YouTube Video Rental Service in the U.S.

The Montreal-based musician is known for his eclectic mix of musical styles, including klezmer, and has played at a number of Jewish festivals and concerts. The “Socalled” Movie documentary will premiere on YouTube the same day that Dolgin performs at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.

This marks the first time the NFB, which co-produced the movie with reFrame Films, has made such a deal with YouTube.

The YouTube Video Rental Service premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and isn’t yet available to Canadians. However, the NFB said that a Canadian theatrical rollout of The “Socalled” Movie will be announced later this year.

The “Socalled” Movie was directed by Garry Beitel and shot in Montreal, New York, France and Ukraine. It features such musicians as Katie Moore, Fred Wesley, C-Rayz Walz, David Krakauer, Matt Haimovitz, Arkady Gendler, Benjamin Steiger Levine, D-Shade, Gonzales and Irving Fields, and is described on its website as “a kaleidoscopic portrait, offering 18 entertaining short films about Socalled’s creative process.”
