Rush Inducted into Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame
The Canadian rock group was honoured for songs such as "Tom Sawyer" and "Closer to the Heart."
Members of the Canadian rock group Rush were inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on Sunday night.
Along with Quebecois singer Robert Charlebois, Rush joined famed Canadian songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and Leonard Cohen in the Hall of Fame. Sixteen songs, including Rush’s “Tom Sawyer,” “Limelight,” “The Spirit of Radio,” “Subdivisions” and “Closer to the Heart,” were inducted.
Rush’s singer and bass player Geddy Lee called this honour “the ultimate compliment,” and drummer lyrcisit Neal Peart said “Songwriting’s not really something we’ve ever been celebrated for.”
Lee was born Gary Lee Weinrib in Toronto, and both his parents were Holocaust survivors.
Over their four-decade career, Rush has sold more than 40 million records worldwide. Keep an eye out for a documentary about the group, RUSH: Beyond The Lighted Stage, premiering at this year’s Hot Docs Festival.
The ceremony took place at the Toronto Centre for the Arts and featured performances of the inductees’ songs by Alexisonfire, Geddy Lee’s protégé Les Claypool, and more.
