The Jewish community in Toronto is marking Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah V’Hagvurah), observed around the world, with a commemorative ceremony this Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at Earl Bales Park (located at Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue).

The ceremony is the largest such gathering outside of Israel, with over 2,000 people attending last year. It is being sponsored by the UJA’s Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre along with the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem. Other community organizations are also helping.

This year, the ceremony is paying tribute to the many contributions that the GTA community’s Holocaust survivors have made to Canada. Thirty survivors are expected to attend the ceremony.

The event, including a candle lighting ceremony, will include the children’s choir from Associated Hebrew School Posluns Education Centre.

The schedule is as follows:

2:00 pm: Ceremony begins with opening remarks and minute of silence

2:05 pm: Jewish War Veterans of Canada and General Wingate Branch 256 Royal Canadian Legion, Canadian national anthem is sung

2:10 pm: Commemoration – poem read by survivor, children’s choir

2:20 pm: Israel Consul General Amir R. Gissin

2:25 pm: Holocaust Survivor Judy Cohen gives Keynote Address

2:35 pm: Candle lighting ceremony by Holocaust survivors and recipient of Righteous Among the Nations distinction

2:50 pm: Commemoration including prayers, Shofar blowing, and Last Post

3:10 pm: End of the Yom Hashoah ceremony.
