On Tuesday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper made an announcement ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Canada. Harper welcomed the Israeli Prime Minister to Canada, calling it a pleasure to have him visit.

Netanyahu will be here for a working trip on May 31.

“Our countries have a close and enduring friendship which we are working to further strengthen,” said Harper in a statement. “There is a tremendous respect in Canada for the courage, resilience and determination of Israel and its people.”

On April 30, Harper spoke to Netanyahu by phone. They discussed the upcoming visit, which will include meetings with senior officials in the Canadian government.

Canada and Israel have had a strong, bilateral relationship, with close political, economic, social and cultural ties during 60 years of diplomatic relations. Ties have been strengthened in the last few years through increased collaboration in areas including public security, defence, trade and investment. There has also been an increase in ministerial visits.

Canada is home to a large Israeli community. Many Israelis live in the GTA, especially in Vaughan.
