On Monday morning, Justice Norman Douglas disclosed his sentence for Max Mahr, who was tried last week for hate crimes in the city of Guelph.

Mahr, an 83-year-old German native who was convicted of hate crimes for scrawling anti-Semitic graffiti and symbols in various public places in Guelph, was sentenced to six months in jail and must complete 40 hours of community service cleaning up the graffiti, in addition to being on probation for two years.

B’nai Brith Canada has commended the strong sentence and public message sent by the judge regarding this case.

Justice Norman Douglas stated that Mahr’s crimes are of the “mindset which led to the Holocaust” and that his graffiti, which included writing “kill the Jews” and “exterminate Israelis,” is a crime which will not be tolerated in Canada.

“In this case, the judge got it right and has sent a strong message to the public that hatred will not be tolerated in 21st century Canada,” said Frank Dimant, Executive Vice President of B’nai Brith Canada.

“We are very satisfied that the judge took Mahr’s crimes very seriously and that through today’s sentence a powerful message in the ongoing fight against antisemitism, in all its forms, has been sent.”
