Israeli Army Introduces New and Improved Grenade
New IDF grenade doesn't explode when hit by bullet or shrapnel.
In what just may be the solution for countless, unnecessary battlefield tragedies, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has joined forces with Israel Military Industries Ltd. (IMI) to develop a new safety mechanism for hand grenades, which will ensure that they won’t explode when hit by bullets. The new grenade has recently passed a number of tests and it could become operational in as little as six months.
The idea for the new safety mechanism was thought up three years ago, and last year its necessity was confirmed, when an incident in the Gaza Strip cost the lives of IDF commander Major Eliran Perez and First Sergeant Ilan Sabitovsky. During an exchange of fire between the troops and Hamas, a bullet hit a grenade which Major Perez was carrying, killing the two and injuring other soldiers in the unit as well.
Essentially, the new mechanism separates the sensitive explosives in the grenade and its detonator mechanism. So, if the grenade is struck externally, the new mechanism prevents it from being set off, ensuring the safety of the soldiers. Nevertheless, the new grenade -which will provide a solution for a centuries-old problem still looks the same on the outside, the only difference is its ‘guts’.
When the new grenade is deemed operational, it will be gradually included in IDF grenades.
