Casspi Will Not Join Maccabi

Maccabi's prized offseason signing hits a roadblock

Omri Casspi will not be joining Maccabi this season
It seemed too good to be true. Maccabi, the former Euroleague powerhouse, was building the ultimate Jewish basketball team, picking and choosing Jewish NBA players and former college stars, and creating a team that could rival any of its previous championship teams.

They signed New Jersey Nets star Jordan Farmar, and followed it up with the signing of former Duke star Jon Scheyer. The finishing touch was suppose to be Omri Casspi, the first Israeli born NBA player.

The signs were good, and rumors were that both sides were very close to an agreement. But then news broke via Twitter on Casspi's offical page:

"Offical - @Casspi18 will not join @MaccabiElectra. The two sides met today & came to the understanding that the tax issues are too big..."

And there you have it. Taxes are what kept Maccabi from having the ultimate Jewish basketball team. I for one was hoping for an NBA lockout just so I could see this team together for a full season, but now it's time for the player's union and the owners to get this mess sorted out.
