Three Months After Riot, Israel’s New Ambassador to Egypt Arrives
Ambassador Yaakov Amitai arrives in Cairo
Amitai will join a small group of Israeli diplomatic staff still in Cairo.
Amitai, replaces Yitzhak Levanon, who three months ago was forced out of the Israeli Embassy after a group of rioters ran amok, tearing tore down a security wall around the Embassy, before storming and trashing its offices. The mob also threw official embassy papers from balconies and ripped down the Israeli flag, in what was described as the worst incident since Israel set up its mission in Egypt.
Despite reports that Embassy officials began looking for a new site in September, Israeli officials are still looking for a new building in which to house the new embassy, so, for now, Amitai will operate from his home in the city.
