Israeli Air Force Welcomes Five Female Flyers
Women Graduate from Army’s Most Prestigious Course
Just days after thousands of Israelis came together near a girl's school in Beit Shemesh to hold a mass anti-segregation rally on December 27th to protest gender segregation and religious extremism, a record five Israeli women received their pilot wings as they graduated the Israeli Air Force Pilots course. It was the largest number of women to ever graduate from the army’s most prestigious course.
The five women, along with 163 other flight academy graduates, received their wings in a ceremony held on December 29th. Participating in this important day were Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz and Air Force Commander Major General Ido Nehoshtan.
Referring to the controversy caused by increasing demands from radical religious elements to exclude women from the public sphere in Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the female graduates.
"A country where women sit in the pilot's seat is a country where women should be able to sit anywhere,” said the PM. "There is no bigger proof to the absurdity of the exclusion of women than the fact that you stand here today."
