A number of Israeli embassies and consulates in the United States and in Europe have received envelopes with a suspicious white powder in them.

The white envelopes, with the word “Anthrax” written on them, were delivered simultaneously to the embassies and consulates. Fortunately, the contents of the envelopes was later shown to be nothing more than a harmless powder.

As a result of the deliveries, which included embassies in Boston, Brussels, Houston, London, The Hague, and New York City, the embassies have raised their alert levels.

Boston’s Israeli Consulate evacuated its staff upon learning of the envelope, and was closed for several hours subject to police orders. The FBI and US State Department are investigating.

“The item was field tested and indicated no immediate threat to public safety,” FBI Special Agent Greg Comcowich said. “Additional testing will be done.”

This latest “anthrax scare” began a week ago in Florida, where the Palm Beach International Airport was partially evacuated after white powder – later found to be harmless - was found on the carpet.
