Remembering the Victims (and the Perpetrators) of the Shoah
The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2005.
This date was chosen to honour the victims of the Holocaust because it’s the date when, in 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated by Soviet troops.
In its resolution, the General Assembly rejected any denial of the Holocaust as an historical event.
And, according to Efraim Zuroff, Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Jerusalem, it’s a day when not only must the victims of the Shoah be remembered, but also those who committed the unspeakable crimes against humanity. Zuroff insists that authorities must take care of the cases against perpetrators in a speedy manner.
"It is important that on this day we remember not only the victims but also those who committed the crimes. Also, it is very important to understand that some of them can still be brought to justice. Therefore, we call on all the governments and countries in which the perpetrators live, and where this can be done, to speed up the cases in order to satisfy justice," Zuroff said during a telephone interview with Tanjug.
The theme of the remembrance day this year is “Children and the Holocaust.”
It is estimated that 1.5 million European Jewish children died in the
Holocaust, alongside some 4.5 million Jewish men and women.
