United Nations Human Rights Council to Investigate Israeli Settlements
Decision is being called Goldstone II by its Critics
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is about to begin an investigation looking at the effects of Israeli settlements on the rights of Palestinians.
Dubbed the Goldstone II by its critics, the Council passed the resolution on Thursday, March 23, to investigate Palestinian human rights in the face of Israeli construction. The Council voted 36 to 1 in favour of the investigation. There were 10 abstentions to the vote, with the United States being the only country to vote against it.
The UNHRC said the initiative will see an investigation of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
As a result of the vote, Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman is considering recalling Israel's ambassador to the U.N. Human Rights Council.
“This is a hypocritical council with an automatic majority against Israel. This council ought to be ashamed of itself," said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while pointing to the current situation in Syria.
"One only had to hear the Syrian representative speak today about human rights in order to understand how detached from reality the council is,” added Netanyahu.
