PA Wants Member State Status at UN Earth Summit
Efforts for international recognition continues for Palestinian Authority
The Palestinian Authority is requesting participation in the United Nations Sustainable Development Conference (Rio+20), as part of its ongoing efforts to achieve international recognition as a state, according to Army Radio.
After its bid for member state status at the UN was stalled by the Security Council in September, the PA vowed to continue seeking membership in various UN agencies.
The first UN agency to award membership to the PA was the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in October. Israel condemned UNESCO’s decision while the US cut off all funds, totaling $60 million to the organization.
The Canadian government also pulled its voluntary contribution to UNESCO, as Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said it shouldn’t be Canada’s responsibility “to make up the tens of millions of dollars they’re losing in funding as a result of a bad decision,” according to CTV.
Israel, Canada and the US see the Palestinian strategy to gain UN recognition as “unilateral steps that undercut attempts to reach a peace agreement through negotiations,” the Jerusalem Post reports.
“[Peace] requires the two parties to get to the table and to achieve a peace deal,” said Baird.
The Israeli government is currently working to prevent Palestinian efforts from succeeding, as the PA seeks to participate as a member state in the Rio+20 Conferences, which will take place in June in Brazil.
According to Army Radio, Israel is hoping to enlist Canada and the US in efforts to thwart the PA’s request.
