The Saryl and Stephen Gross Maof School for Excellence, a new school catering to the needs of gifted and high-achieving students in Beer Sheva was officially dedicated recently.

One of the largest schools of its kind in Israel, Maof will have a total enrollment of 500 students from Beer Sheva and throughout the Negev with a potential to double its capacity.

The new building, which is located in Beer Sheva’s old city and within the compound of the future Science Park, cost a total of NIS 8 million. Its construction was initiated by Federation CJA Montreal, the Beer Sheva municipality, the Ministry of Education and the Rashi Foundation who managed the project. Saryl and Stephen Gross from Montreal provided more than half of the funding for the project.

Mr. and Mrs. Gross were in attendance at the dedication ceremony. They were joined by Beer Sheva mayor Ruvik Danilovitch, deputy mayor Dr. Hefzi Zohar, Elie Elalouf, executive vice president of the Rashi Foundation, David Cape, President Federation CJA- Montreal and Shlomit Rachmel, director of the department for gifted and high-achieving students in the Ministry of Education.

Mayor Danilovitch thanked all the partners who had joined forces to make the school a reality. Galit Frankel, the school’s principal, said that Maof will comprise a unique and vital addition to Beer Sheva’s education system.

Also talking part in the ceremony were the 45-strong members of the Montreal Combined Jewish Appeal Chair’s Mission. After the event, the mission proceeded to the Goldberg Community Anchor for the dedication of a Torah scroll donated by Saryl and Stephen Gross in memory of Sarah Toledano. The group visited various projects supported by Montreal’s Federation CJA, including Start-Up, which provides guidance to young adults, and Net@, which offers advanced computer courses to high school students. That evening, the group attended a ceremony to mark Memorial Day for Israel’s Fallen Soldiers together with 200 teenagers from the March of Living contingent from Montreal. They spent the next day in Jerusalem and visited Masada on Independence Day.
